Sustainable Coffee Cultivation in Kenya: A Partnership for the Future

In collaboration with local cooperatives in Nyeri County, GrowGrounds is transforming traditional coffee plantations into sustainable agroforestry systems, enhancing both farmers’ livelihoods and the environment.

Learn more about agroforestry in Kenya here.

Challenge: Traditional monoculture coffee plantations in Kenya face challenges such as soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and economic instability for farmers.

Solution: By implementing syntropic agroforestry systems, GrowGrounds introduces methods that integrate diverse plant species, improve soil health, and increase nature-resilience. This approach creates more diverse and natural ecosystems that in turn diversifies farmers’ income sources.

Results: The project leads to the planting of 1.1 million trees over 3,500 hectares, involving 5,800 farmers. Participants will likely experience increased yields, improved soil quality, and access to new income streams through carbon credit sales.

Future Outlook: With plans to expand the project to 30,000 hectares in East Africa by 2029, GrowGrounds continues to promote sustainable coffee cultivation and empower local communities.

This case exemplifies how innovative agricultural practices can drive positive change for both people and the planet.

GrowGrounds’ Role and Commitment

As a leader in agroforestry and carbon markets, GrowGrounds will:

  • Manage the overall project, ensuring compliance with the Gold Standard for carbon credits.
  • Provide training and technical expertise to Kenyan cooperatives and their network of technicians.
  • Facilitate the sale of Planned Emission Removals (PERs) and Verified Emission Removals (VERs), ensuring transparency and maximum benefit for farmers.

A Future Built on Collaboration

This partnership is just the beginning. The initial phase, starting with 5,800 farmers on 3,500 hectares, will pave the way for scaling the initiative to 30,000 hectares in East Africa by 2029.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Together, we can reimagine coffee farming and unlock the full potential of nature-growing solutions to combat climate change.
