Coffee used to be a product of nature. It used to grow in dense vegetation, but the industrialization of agriculture during the 20th century made coffee become a monoculture. Forests and vegetation were cut down. Coffee trees were placed in rows without competing vegetation. Artificial fertilizers and pesticides were introduced as efficient replacements for natural ecosystems. Productivity went up. The system was efficiently running.

But then it changed. It turned out that initial efficiency came with a price. Coffee farmers were operating at a loss. Forests were deforested. Nature was destroyed. And even the coffee plants began to react. They became more sensitive to diseases and pests. The system was broken.
